Center for Craft evolves strategic direction to explore how and why craft matters
This year’s discussions addressed how craft is defined in the university setting, the role of the artist outside of the studio, the anticipated impact of craft in 10 years, and how national and regional craft conversations inform one another. Since 2005, the Center for Craft has awarded $4 million in grants to over 500 emerging artists, curators, and scholars, and worked with over 180 different participating institutions. Each year, the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship identifies ten undergraduate graduating college students with exemplary skill in craft. Awardees receive $15,000 - one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. CG Spectrum offers diploma programs in VFX, game design, 3D animation & modeling, and concept art. Publications
The group discussed and made recommendations concerning the content, format, approach, audience, and resources needed to create a relevant and successful program. It mapped the many factors that could influence craft makerspace initiatives, from types of users, to policy and tools. In the second session, participants speculated about the emerging issues which, in the future, are likely to impact the success of craft makerspaces. Finally, participants used this content and their expertise to build hypothetical models of what a future craft makerspace could be.

These intersections informed a final series of reflections about what craft can do. “Craft can...” persist, change, create, impact, grow, be utilized, and so on. Throughout this discussion, the goal was to acknowledge the multipotentiality of craft and recognize the various aspects of discussion that had grounded the participants throughout the Craft Think Tank.

As part of a larger project to create a legacy tool for American ceramic artists working 1945 onward, The Marks Project received support to document the American Museum of Ceramic Art’s (AMOCA) American Ceramic Society collection (ACerS). While documenting the clay arts members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild assisted by a 2017 Center for Craft, Creativity and Design Project Grant, TMP discovered the ACerS collection. CDA has outlined a general concept art track, a character design track, an environmental design track, and a storyboard track. Many artists choose to pursue a degree or diploma program just to expand their options. This project will focus on a constructed history of contemporary Chicanx weaving that intersects the U.S. fiber movement from the 1960s to the present, and an engagement with the absence of Chicanx weaving in U.S. craft and Latinx art histories. Syn Studio is accredited by The Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Research of Quebec, but credits may not transfer to US schools. Make sure to check with any prospective US schools to see if they’ll accept Syn Studio course credits. Syn Studio’s program finishes with a course specifically geared towards helping students succeed in the industry. It’s also a good option if you’re at a beginner level and want a comprehensive start-to-finish program to bring your work up to a professional level. Since this is an accredited four year school, all undergrads must also earn general education credits in areas such as English, math, science, humanities, and so on.
This broadened lens more accurately reflects the reality of craft and allows the Center more opportunities to empower and resource emergent, groundbreaking, and unconventional talent, including in historically underrepresented communities. The Center will be realigning resources and focus to support the many paths into and within craft, serving as a platform to resource, catalyze, and amplify how and why craft matters. This could be an interdisciplinary program leading to a degree, or alternately, a concentration within an existing degree program. A director will be named as an endowed chair placed in a department (most likely an art history department). This position will entail both the administrative and professorial aspects of running the program.
It contributes to the economic and social wellbeing of communities, connects us to our cultural histories, and is integral to building a sustainable future. The 2009 Craft Think Tank convened 19 though leaders in the field of craft to discuss a variety of topics suggested by participants. Ten graduating university seniors were selected from a national pool of 76 applications by a panel consisting of artists, curators, and professionals who play critical roles in the field today. These ten Fellows were awarded based on their notable artistic merit and demonstrated potential for contributing to the field of craft. Twenty-one mid-career craft artists who teach will receive $10,000 grants and join an 8-month cohort experience that supports their artistic and career development with programs, mentorship, and peer-to-peer learning.
